Telling the Whole Story
UVA has a profound responsibility to fully reckon with its own complex history. By recognizing the intent and acknowledging the impact of Confederate monuments around Grounds, the University can separate history from memory and imbue future generations with a better understanding of the Civil War and the University's role in glorifying such a cause. As President Jim Ryan has stated, "our built environment should represent our core and enduring values, as well as our highest aspirations." In altering the Confederate memorial landscape on Grounds and choosing to wrestle with its own legacy, the University can ultimately fulfill its mission of being both "great and good."
